Aug 14, 2018

NAIROBI, Kenya — Nicholas Bett, a Kenyan runner who won the 2015 world championship title in the 400-meter hurdles, was killed in an early-morning car crash Wednesday in the country's famed high-altitude training region, police and his coach said. He was 28. Bett had only just returned home this week from the African championships in Nigeria. Egypt keeper, oldest World Cup player, quits national team

Aug 14, 2018

CAIRO — Egypt goalkeeper Essam El Hadary is retiring from the national team after becoming the oldest man to play in a World Cup match. El Hadary started the World Cup as Egypt's backup goalkeeper, but he played in his team's final group match in Russia, saving a penalty in the 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia on June 25. I am very proud...

Marx, Whiteley return to Springboks; also 3 new players

Aug 14, 2018

CAPE TOWN, South Africa — Flyhalf Damian Willemse is one of three uncapped players in South Africa's squad for the Rugby Championship. The 20-year-old Willemse was joined by uncapped flankers Cyle Brink and Marco van Staden in a squad of 35 announced Monday by coach Rassie Erasmus. Erasmus also recalled hooker Malcolm Marx, No. 8 Warren Whiteley, scrumhalf Ross Cronje and center Lionel Mapoe, all members of the Lions team that reached Saturday's Super Rugby final. They didn't play any part in South Africa's series win over England in June, Erasmus' first assignment in charge. Erasmus decided that flanker Siya...

Aug 14, 2018

ASABA, Nigeria — Caster Semenya won the 400 meters at the African championships on Friday and said she still plans to compete in middle-distance races at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics despite new IAAF rules starting in November that could prevent her running in her favored events. The world and Olympic 800-meter champion displayed her ability across a wide range to set a South African record of 49.96 seconds and win gold in Asaba, Nigeria. She finished well clear of Botswana's Christine Botlogetwe, who was second in 51.19. Nigeria's Yinka Ajayi was third in 51.34. This year's African championships was the...

Egypt names Aguirre as national coach despite investigation

Aug 14, 2018

CAIRO — Javier Aguirre became the new coach of Egypt on Thursday despite his involvement in a match-fixing investigation in Spain. Spanish prosecutors said in February that Aguirre was facing two years in prison if convicted in a case involving a total of 41 players and former club officials. He has denied any wrongdoing, but Japan fired him as its coach in 2015 for his ties to the investigation. "Everything is cleared," Aguirre said at a news conference in Cairo on Thursday. "There is no way it (the investigation) will affect my work here." The case involves Spanish clubs Levante...
