In Salah's Nile delta village, the Egyptian is a super hero

May 25, 2018

NAGRIG, Egypt — The cafe began to fill up more than two hours before kickoff. By the time the match began, some 200 men and boys — some as young as five — huddled around two large TV screens at a cafe Mohamed Salah frequents when he's back visiting his village deep in Egypt's Nile Delta. Salah didn't score, but almost everyone at the cafe let out a joyous scream and clapped enthusiastically at the final whistle: Liverpool, the English club for which Salah has scored more than 40 goals since he joined this season, has reached the final of...

Mane leads Senegal's 23-man World Cup squad

May 25, 2018

DAKAR, Senegal — Senegal named its final 23-man squad for the World Cup on Thursday, with Liverpool forward Sadio Mane leading a group that includes key defender Kalidou Koulibaly of Napoli and midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate of West Ham. Coach Aliou Cisse, captain of the 2002 team that reached the quarterfinals in the country's only previous World Cup appearance, gambled on the fitness of Monaco winger Keita Balde and Anderlecht defender Kara Mbodji. Balde last played on April 7 while Mbodji missed most of this season with a knee problem but has recently returned to training. The 20-year-old Rennes winger Ismaila...

Moses, Iwobi and Musa lead a strong group of forwards in the 30-man squad that also includes Kelechi Iheanacho and Moses Simon. Nwankwo is one of two surprise inclusions by coach Gernot Rohr after scoring seven goals in Serie A this season. One of them was an overhead kick against Juventus. The other unexpected selection is home-based striker Junior Lokosa, who is the Nigerian Premier League's leading...

May 25, 2018

NAIROBI, Kenya — Former Olympic 1500-meter champion Asbel Kiprop says he has tested positive for doping and is alleging officials gave prior warning of the supposedly unannounced out-of-competition test before extorting money from him. Kiprop wired funds to one of the doping control officers while they were at his house in Iten, Kenya, collecting his urine sample last November, he said in a statement issued via his lawyer on Thursday. The 2008 Olympic gold medalist and three-time world champion said he learned in February the sample tested positive and was "extremely shocked." "I vehemently deny any doping," he said. News...
